Below are the eligibility requirements set by the FAA to be eligible to test for a Commercial Single Engine Airplane Rating: 

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language
  • Hold at least an FAA Private Pilot Certificate
  • Obtain at least an FAA Second Class Medical Certificate
  • Pass an FAA Knowledge Test (Written)
  • Pass an FAA Practical Test (Oral and Flight)

FAA required 250 hours total time must Include:

  • Minimum 100 hours powered aircraft (50 airplanes)
  • Minimum 100 hours of PIC time (50 airplanes)
  • Minimum 50 hours of PIC cross-country
  • Minimum 20 hours of instruction
  • 10 hours in a complex airplane, or technically advanced airplane (TAA) training
  • 10 hours of instrument training
  • One 2-hour dual cross-country
  • One 2-hour dual night cross-country
  • 3 hours checkride prep
  • Minimum 10 hours solo
  • 1 cross-country at least 300NM with three landings
  • 5 hours night (10 takeoff and landings)

Here is a list of materials that are needed for an Instrument pilot in addition to the private pilot materials:

  • View Limiting Device
  • iPad with Foreflight Subscription (suggest at least Pro Plus)
