Below are the eligibility requirements set by the FAA to be eligible to test for the Certified Flight Instructor CFI-A practical test: 

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language
  • Hold at least an FAA Commercial Pilot or ATP Certificate
  • Hold an Instrument Rating if seeking CFI-Airplane or Instruments
  • Obtain at least an FAA Second Class Medical Certificate
  • Pass FAA Fundamentals of Instructing Knowledge Test (Written)
  • Pass FAA CFI-A Knowledge Test (Written)
  • Pass FAA Practical Test (Oral and Flight)

Below is the minimum required aeronautical experience set forth by the FAA:

  • Minimum 15 hours PIC in category and class sought
  • 3 hours of practical test preparation*

*All training for the Initial CFI certificate must be with a two-year Certified Flight Instructor.
