If you're an aspiring pilot seeking to take your flying skills to the next level, earning an instrument rating is an essential step. With unpredictable weather conditions in Southern California, an instrument rating is vital for any pilot who wants to fly safely and confidently (mostly) year-round.

Below are the minimum requirements to test for your Instrument Rating license.

  • Hold at least an FAA Private Pilot Certificate w/ appropriate category and class
  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language
  • Pass an FAA Knowledge Test (Written)
  • Pass an FAA Practical Test (Oral and Flight)

FAA required 40 hours of instrument time (simulated and/or actual)

Must Include:

  • Minimum 15 hours dual-instruction from a CFI-AI
  • 1 IFR cross-country at least 250NM with three approaches
  • 3 hours checkride prep
  • Minimum 50 hours cross-country PIC time (10 hours airplanes)

Here is a list of materials that are needed for an Instrument pilot in addition to the private pilot materials:

  • iPad with Foreflight Subscription (suggest at least Pro Plus)
